HS2 Comes to Park Vale Academy -23rd May 2019

HS2 is addressing the current skills shortage in the UK by inspiring the next generation to get involved with transport infrastructure related careers.

HS2 Secondary Education Programme –

The HS2 Secondary School Programme supports students aged 11-14 years in developing their knowledge and skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), with real world examples from the transport infrastructure industries.

Year 8 Workshop

The Programme consisted of a specially developed STEM workshop day, delivered by educational professionals and supported by HS2 Education Ambassadors. Sixty excited Year 8 students attended this full day workshop on 23rd May 2019. As a starting point, students reflected on their own skills and attributes to understand how they could lead to  a whole variety of STEM careers.

Students then designed a railway station of the future, applying their understanding of STEM career roles, developing their teamwork, creativity and communication skills. An engineering challenge followed where students had to design and create a tunnel by solving real-world design problems.

Finally, students used all their learning from the day’s activities to grown and manage a rail network and displayed a new enthusiasm for STEM careers.

Annual Year 11 Presentation Evening. What a night it was!

6 Nov 2020

On Thursday 2nd May 2019 Park Vale Academy hosted its annual Year 11 Presentation Evening.  What a night it was!

The entire evening was a celebration of just how fabulous our Year 11 students are. Eighty-eight students were celebrated and each awarded a certificate.  The final  award for overall commendations was won jointly this year by two amazing and dedicated students. Each had citations, especially written about them by their subject teachers,  shared with the audience.

The evening was a demonstration of just how much pride there is in both the academy and their students.  Guests were treated to not one, but two special performances: Brodie who sang a solo accompanied by Mr Ribeiro on the piano and  two year 11 students who performed an emotional dance piece. The audience responded with thunderous applause.

National Citizenship Service – Year 11 Summer 2019

6 Nov 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The NCS (National Citizen Service) are due to attend Park Vale Academy on 19th March 2019 to discuss the Summer 2019 Programme with Year 11 students. NCS is a nationally recognized programme for those aged 16-17 which takes place during the school holidays. It’s a great way for young people to learn the skills for work and life they need to succeed in the future, whilst having an amazing time.

When we visit to give a presentation about NCS, all students will have the chance to show their interest by completing a form. We’ll offer them the chance to take a sign up pack home, which they can bring back to school by the deadline date.  Those that bring back their completed sign up pack & payment by the deadline date will receive a free NCS T-Shirt!

 What happens on NCS?

  •  ADVENTURE: Phase 1 – Feel the freedom of the outside world during five days away from home, taking on adrenaline-fuelled activities like rock climbing, canoeing and archery. Your team will cheer you along every step of the way, sharing in every challenge, every success. Then you’ll have a few days back at home for a much-needed rest!
  • DISCOVERY: Phase 2 – Expect transformation, because this week is all about developing YOU. Living independently, you’ll learn essential life skills from local business leaders and charities, gain confidence in public speaking, communications skills and budgeting. It all looks great on your CV, whatever you do next.
  • SOCIAL ACTION: Phase 3 – Now it’s time to make your mark. Back at home, you and your team will devise a social action project based on an issue you feel passionate about. You have the skills and confidence to do anything – the more original, the better! This is your chance to feel proud by making a real difference in your community.
  • CELEBRATION: Phase 4 – Finally, take stock of all you’ve done. You’ll have overcome challenges, pushed yourself into new and exciting territories, and had experiences you never thought possible. Celebrate your achievements with your fellow NCSers at one great event before exploring all the opportunities NCS opens up to you. This is just the beginning!

NCS costs £50, with all meals and activities covered. We may be able to offer bursaries to those who need financial support.

Easter Revision School

6 Nov 2020

Easter Revision Classes – Saturday 6th April, Monday 8th April and Tuesday 9th April

We will be running Easter revision classes on the above dates to provide guidance and support for students sitting exams in the summer term.  Students who attended similar sessions last year found them extremely beneficial and felt that in many cases they were a contributing factor to examination success.

Students have the opportunity to choose which sessions they would like to attend based on their individual needs.  All sessions will be based in department classrooms (apart from the English session in the Main Hall) and will take place as per the timetable on the reverse side of this letter. Students should bring a packed lunch with them for the day.  Please note that it isn’t compulsory to attend all days and students do not have to wear school uniform.

We hope you will support us with this initiative and encourage your child to attend.  Please complete the attached return slip by Monday 1st April 2019 to indicate whether your child is attending and if so, what their session preferences are.  Please hand in all return slips to Ms Street at main reception.
