UK BEBRAS Computing Challenge November 2024
15 Nov 2024
We are thrilled to announce that we have successfully entered Year 8 students for another year of the UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge 2024. This year, all year 8 students (10-12) studying Computer Science and IT courses have been entered. The competition has been live from the 4th of November 2024 and the first round ends on the 15th of November 2024. The results of the first round are available on the week beginning 25th November. The second round (top 10%), called the “UK BEBRAS CODING CHALLENGE” starts on the 14th to the 28th of March.
The Bebras Challenge introduces computational thinking to students worldwide. This exciting challenge takes place in schools, under the supervision of teachers, over two weeks every November. Last year, over 3 million students from more than 80 countries participated!
In the UK, the challenge is open to all young people aged 6 to 19. Each participant has 45 minutes to tackle a series of interactive tasks, designed to encourage logical thinking and problem-solving skills appropriate for their age group. The challenge is conducted online, and tasks are marked automatically by our competition system. The tasks are designed to allow every student the opportunity to showcase their potential, whether they excel in maths or computing, or not.
Every participating student receives a certificate. Certificates are awarded within each age group based on school performance, not national boundaries, in three categories: Distinction (top 25%), Merit (next 25%), and Participation (remaining 50%). Additionally, a “Best in School” certificate is awarded in each age group category. Certificates can be printed at school or home or distributed electronically.
The UK Bebras Challenge is organised by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and delivered in partnership with the University of Oxford.
Tech We Can Virtual Live Workshops at PVA
15 Nov 2024
Park Vale is actively working with a charity called Tech We Can. Together we are educating, equipping and inspiring young people, especially girls, to study technology subjects and choose a career in technology. Tech We Can – aim to inspire young adults – especially girls and women – to consider a future career in technology, by connecting them to relatable role models who have recently started their careers.
The first live workshop was delivered to two groups of Year 9 girls on 14th November 2024 who were looking at technology required for living in space. Several more workshops will take place across November and December.
More information can be found at https://techshecan.org/tech-we-can and also videos of live lessons.
