Year: 2020
EVENTS
6 Nov 2020
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we have taken the decision to cancel our work experience programme for this academic year. This is not a decision taken lightly but, as I am sure you can appreciate, these are unique times. Â We have taken this decision in order to keep children safe and to not put additional pressure on the businesses that the students were going to on placement.

Dear Parent/GuardianÂ
Your child is now due their Meningococcal ACWY vaccination and their Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio (Teenage 3 in 1 Booster) vaccination. These vaccines are offered to all students in Year 9 and will be given in school. These are part of the childhood immunisation programme.Â
Why get your child vaccinated?
-  Meningococcal ACWY – protects your son/daughter against four types of meningococcal bacteria (Types A, C, W and Y) that cause meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). We strongly urge you to take this opportunity to protect your son/daughter against these four infections which, as you will be aware, can kill or have serious life-long consequences.
- The 3 in 1 booster – protects your son/daughter against Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio, all of which can be very serious diseases. This is a booster for the vaccinations your son/daughter received as a baby, and then again at approximately 3-4 years (the preschool booster)
How do you let us know you want your child to have the vaccinations? Please fill in one online consent form for each child here …
 https://www.nottinghamshireimmunisations.co.uk/Forms/DTP
The code for your child’s school is NG144487
Please fill it in as soon as you can to ensure your child gets vaccinated.Even if you do not want your child to be vaccinated please complete the form to let us know.If we don’t receive an electronic consent form, your son/daughter will be given the opportunity to self-consent.Â
The decision to have the vaccination is legally your son/daughter’s as long as they understand the reasons for the vaccination and the issues in giving consent, however the nurse would much rather have your permission as well.If you need more information
Please visit http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/pages/vaccination-schedule-age-checklist.aspx where you can find information about the diseases and the vaccines, as well as links to other useful websites.
Celebrating World Book Day
6 Nov 2020
Celebrating World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day, and their love for reading at Park Vale Academy, staff dressed up as their favourite characters from the world of literature. Students participated in various activities throughout the big day and especially enjoyed being taught their lessons by characters from books.
World Book Day, which is celebrated annually at the Academy, enabled students to learn about a variety of books and authors –both classics and modern. The Academy promotes reading for pleasure through its curriculum. World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity for all staff to get involved and display their passion for reading.

The academy’s librarian, Mrs Limb, created fun and creative activities for students to take part in. Lamb to the Slaughter was the book where all students had the chance to listen to it being read to them in their lessons. Mrs Limb, dressed as Mary Poppins said: ‘In the academy, trying to promote the love of reading is the heart of everything we do and World Day is a great platform for this.’
World Book Day is just a small part of Park Vale Academy’s commitment to improving literacy and just reading for pleasure.

Coronavirus Update 16 March 2020
Obviously the school currently remains open in line with the advice from the government and Public Health England. Therefore parents should continue to send their children into school as normal unless they exhibit any symptoms such as a dry cough or fever. We will let you know if there is any change to this situation and a letter will be sent home this week outlining our contingency plans should we be forced to close at any stage in the future.
Please see the attached letter for full details.

Coronavirus Advice for Parents
The following advice for parents / guardians has been received from the Department for Education:-
You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your child catching the Coronavirus. There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal. The overall risk to the UK remains moderate, however, we understand that people may be concerned where there are children, students or staff returning from or visiting areas of specific concern and advise you, if necessary, to seek further information from the following government sources.

Y10 CV Writing Workshop – Friday 14th February 2020
6 Nov 2020
People Managers Annette and Farooq worked with all our Year 10 students through a series of interactive and engaging workshops across the day. The CV Writing workshop enhanced our students’ ability to write a compelling CV and also how to tailor their CVs to the requirements of the role.
Annette and Farooq advised students on how to create the perfect CV, sharing with them essential hints and tips on techniques. This interaction with an employer provided our student a valuable opportunity to learn about current employment markets and what interviewers are actually looking for in a candidate.
Our students received constructive feedback at every stage regarding their CV development and the employment and skills that are valued in the workplace (Gatsby Benchmark 5).The session provided an insight to students of the world of work and better prepares them for their mock interviews, work experience and work related learning. A huge thank you to both Annette and Farooq for their work with Park Vale Academy and we look forward to working with them again at the Interview Skills Workshops on 18th March 2020.Â

E- Safety Parent Information Evening 11th February 2020
6 Nov 2020
ESafety information evening Tuesday 11th February 2020 6 – 6.30pm Â

Having access to technology on a daily basis offers up many benefits. For most of us, it would be impossible to live without it. However, as technology moves on at such a pace, it is sometimes difficult to keep up with the new developments and trends, particularly with regards to mobile technologies and safe and secure accessibility to online material. Â
At Park Vale Academy, we work to provide high quality guidance for students in relation to the dangers of being online through our curriculum and DRIVE assemblies. ESafety is an important part of keeping students safe at Park Vale Academy. We have extensive security measures in place in the academy, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard students from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Â
However, we can only be successful in keeping students safe online if we work with you to ensure the ESafety message is consistent. Your help is needed to discuss with your children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online. Children can accidently or deliberately be exposed to unpleasant and unwanted content or comments online and there are steps you can take at home to minimise this risk. Â
For this reason, an information evening has been organised to help you to contribute to the process of helping your child to be aware of the potential risks associated with using technologies. Ofsted increasingly view Parents ESafety Awareness events as essential components of effective safeguarding provision and I would therefore appreciate your support in attending this event. The event will be taking place on Tuesday 11th February 2020, 6 – 6.30pm and I would encourage you to come along with your child. Â
The evening will be focusing on encouraging everyone to think about identity online, looking at how the internet shapes how they think of themselves and others. This year the Safer Internet Day campaign will be using the hashtag #freetobe – exploring all of the things that young people should be free to be, when they are online. Get involved to play your part! Â
The event will last approximately 30 minutes and members of the Business and IT Faculty, as well as students, will address the factors mentioned above and help support working safely together.Â

Best Performing Schools in Nottingham
In case anyone missed it, here is a link to the article in last week’s NEP about the Best Performing Schools in Nottingham. Great to see last year’s fantastic results placing Park Vale well up the league-table of local schools. (the table is based on the DFE headline measure for Progress 8 which measures the amount of progress each student makes from KS2 SATs to GCSE results in Year 11).
