IMPORTANT UPDATE : How GCSE grades will be awarded to students.
6 Nov 2020
Dear Parent
As you may have seen, details were published on Friday of how grades will be awarded to students taking GCSEs and A-Levels. Details for how vocational and technical qualifications will be awarded this summer will follow. Sally Collier, who leads Ofqual, the organisation which oversees exams and qualifications in this country has written to students and the letter can be found here:
Your child’s teachers will provide assessed grades in each subject they are taking. These assessments will be based on what the teacher believes each student would have achieved had they sat exams this summer, and on a range of evidence. This will include:
Students’ classwork and bookwork, or performances in subjects like PE, music or drama
- Any non-exam assessment, whether or not completed
- The results of any assignments or mock exams
- Any previous exam results.
We have not been asked to set any additional homework or mock exams to make these assessed grades. Instead I would encourage you to support your child in their preparation for whatever route they intend to pursue post-16 and post 18.
Teachers will also be asked to rank students in order for each subject, so as to split students awarded the same grade. These assessed grades will be confidential and teachers will not be allowed to share these grades with students. We have been asked to send these grades to Ofqual by the end of May/start of June. Ofqual will then look at all the grades and decide what the final grades for each student in each subject should be. It is developing the model it will use to do this, so all grades are fair, but it expects to use a range of information to do this such as students’ prior attainment and previous exam results at schools. Your child will get their final grades in the summer.
There will be an appeals process and Ofqual has also said that it is working with exam boards so that there is an opportunity, if necessary, for students to sit exams, if they would like to, in the autumn term. More information on that will follow.
Ofqual has said it would like to reassure you that the grades your child will get this summer will look exactly the same as in previous years, and will have equal status with universities, colleges and employers, so that young people can move forward in their lives as planned. Further information can be found here:
I hope this gives answers to questions you may have, we will be in touch with any further information once issued.

School Closure Update: Key-Workers

School Closure Update: Key-Workers
Obviously the government guidance remains that from Monday, all children should stay at home if possible. However if you as parents work in essential front-line services and are not able to organise appropriate childcare, you will still be able to send your son or daughter into school as we will be running a daily programme of study and other activities for them. If you think you qualify for this provision, please contact our main office asap with your details, including an up-to-date email address so that we can send you a copy of the daily schedule we will be offering with specific timings included. If you are unsure, whether you qualify for this provision, the link below will take you to the full guidance provided by the Department for Education:

Important information for Year 11 students and parents
6 Nov 2020
The Department for Education has outlined that all Year 11 students will receive a calculated grade to replace this summer’s exams. Teachers will be asked to submit their judgement about the grade that they believe the student would have received if exams had gone ahead.
To produce this, teachers will take into account a range of evidence and data including performance on mock exams and non-exam assessment – clear guidance on how to do this fairly and robustly will be provided to schools and colleges. The exam boards will then combine this information with other relevant data, including prior attainment, and use this information to produce a calculated grade for each student, which will be a best assessment of the work they have put in.
Â
We do not yet have any further details but will update all parents as soon as we do. However, we do know that the Department for Education has said it is possible that not all students will receive the predicted grade submitted by their teacher. Students will be able to appeal this and there will be an exam option for those that wish it as soon as is reasonably possible after schools reopen. For this reason we would urge all Year 11 students to continue to complete the work provided by their teachers.

EVENTS
6 Nov 2020
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we have taken the decision to cancel our work experience programme for this academic year. This is not a decision taken lightly but, as I am sure you can appreciate, these are unique times. Â We have taken this decision in order to keep children safe and to not put additional pressure on the businesses that the students were going to on placement.

Dear Parent/GuardianÂ
Your child is now due their Meningococcal ACWY vaccination and their Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio (Teenage 3 in 1 Booster) vaccination. These vaccines are offered to all students in Year 9 and will be given in school. These are part of the childhood immunisation programme.Â
Why get your child vaccinated?
-  Meningococcal ACWY – protects your son/daughter against four types of meningococcal bacteria (Types A, C, W and Y) that cause meningitis (inflammation of the brain lining) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). We strongly urge you to take this opportunity to protect your son/daughter against these four infections which, as you will be aware, can kill or have serious life-long consequences.
- The 3 in 1 booster – protects your son/daughter against Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Polio, all of which can be very serious diseases. This is a booster for the vaccinations your son/daughter received as a baby, and then again at approximately 3-4 years (the preschool booster)
How do you let us know you want your child to have the vaccinations? Please fill in one online consent form for each child here …
 https://www.nottinghamshireimmunisations.co.uk/Forms/DTP
The code for your child’s school is NG144487
Please fill it in as soon as you can to ensure your child gets vaccinated.Even if you do not want your child to be vaccinated please complete the form to let us know.If we don’t receive an electronic consent form, your son/daughter will be given the opportunity to self-consent.Â
The decision to have the vaccination is legally your son/daughter’s as long as they understand the reasons for the vaccination and the issues in giving consent, however the nurse would much rather have your permission as well.If you need more information
Please visit http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/pages/vaccination-schedule-age-checklist.aspx where you can find information about the diseases and the vaccines, as well as links to other useful websites.
Celebrating World Book Day
6 Nov 2020
Celebrating World Book Day
To celebrate World Book Day, and their love for reading at Park Vale Academy, staff dressed up as their favourite characters from the world of literature. Students participated in various activities throughout the big day and especially enjoyed being taught their lessons by characters from books.
World Book Day, which is celebrated annually at the Academy, enabled students to learn about a variety of books and authors –both classics and modern. The Academy promotes reading for pleasure through its curriculum. World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity for all staff to get involved and display their passion for reading.

The academy’s librarian, Mrs Limb, created fun and creative activities for students to take part in. Lamb to the Slaughter was the book where all students had the chance to listen to it being read to them in their lessons. Mrs Limb, dressed as Mary Poppins said: ‘In the academy, trying to promote the love of reading is the heart of everything we do and World Day is a great platform for this.’
World Book Day is just a small part of Park Vale Academy’s commitment to improving literacy and just reading for pleasure.

Coronavirus UpdateD 17th March

Coronavirus Update 16 March 2020
Obviously the school currently remains open in line with the advice from the government and Public Health England. Therefore parents should continue to send their children into school as normal unless they exhibit any symptoms such as a dry cough or fever. We will let you know if there is any change to this situation and a letter will be sent home this week outlining our contingency plans should we be forced to close at any stage in the future.
Please see the attached letter for full details.

Coronavirus Advice for Parents
The following advice for parents / guardians has been received from the Department for Education:-
You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your child catching the Coronavirus. There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal. The overall risk to the UK remains moderate, however, we understand that people may be concerned where there are children, students or staff returning from or visiting areas of specific concern and advise you, if necessary, to seek further information from the following government sources.
