8th March 2023 – International Women’s Day #EmbraceEquity

8 Mar 2023

For International Women’s Day and beyond, let’s all fully #EmbraceEquity.

Park Vale Academy fully support IWD and believe that equity isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.

A focus on gender equity needs to be part of every society’s DNA.

And it’s critical to understand the difference between equity and equality.

The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren’t enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action. Read more about this here.

All IWD activity is valid, that’s what makes IWD inclusive.

So give equity a huge embrace

IWD 2023 campaign theme #EmbraceEquity

We can all truly embrace equity.

It’s not just something we say. It’s not just something we write about.

It’s something we need to think about, know, value and embrace.

It’s what we believe in, unconditionally. Equity means creating an inclusive world.

IWD theme 2023 #EmbraceEquity

And we can all play a part

Each one of us can actively support and embrace equity within our own sphere of influence.

2023 International Women's Day campaign theme is Embrace Equity

We can all challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion.

Collective activism is what drives change. From grassroots action to wide-scale momentum, we can all embrace equity.

Forging gender equity isn’t limited to women solely fighting the good fight. Allies are incredibly important for the social, economic, cultural, and political advancement of women.

IWD 2023 theme Embrace Equality

Everyone everywhere can play a part.

All IWD activity is valid.

That’s what makes IWD so inclusive.

Collectively, we can all forge positive change.

2023 International Women's Day campaign #EmbraceEquity

Being included, and a sense of belonging, feel right

When we embrace equity, we embrace diversity, and we embrace inclusion.

We embrace equity to forge harmony and unity, and to help drive success for all.

Equality is the goal, and equity is the means to get there.

Through the process of equity, we can reach equality.

2023 IWD theme #EmbraceEquity

Embracing equity is the right thing to do

What is 2023 International Women's Day theme?

Don’t just say it. Think it. Be it. Do it. Value it. Truly embrace it.

Embrace equity in all its forms.

Nottingham Fire & Rescue Service -January 2023

5 Mar 2023

Nottingham Fire and Rescue Services visited Park Vale Academy as part of their PSHE education programme to teach youngsters about preventing incidents. The operational response crew were in attendance, but unfortunately on one occasion, just as the assembly started, they had to leave and respond to an emergency call.

Fires set deliberately have a significant effect on the local economy, damage the environment, destroy property, and can, in the worst cases, take someone’s life.

Even small fires can spread very quickly, and often much quicker than expected. What may have been intended to be just a small fire or just a bit of fun, can quickly spread to become out of control. Deliberate fires can also result in an injury to the person setting the fire, or others who may become trapped by a rapidly developing fire. People have also been killed as a result of deliberate fire setting.

Each year Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attends around 2,000 deliberate fires. These range from fires in bins, skips, fly-tipped waste, grasslands and fields, barns, and haystacks, to properties and buildings. These cost the fire service and local organisations and businesses money; however, the true cost could potentially be even more significant. If fire service resources are tied up at this type of fire, it may mean a delay in attending a more serious incident such as a house fire, or a road traffic collision in which someone is trapped, again meaning that someone’s life is endangered.

How would you feel if the small bin fire you set to impress your friends meant the delay in the attendance of a fire engine to your home where a family member was trapped?

The following information gives advice on how you can help prevent deliberate fires to help keep you, your family, and your community safe.

  • Report any suspicious activity to CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 55 111, or by calling the Police 101 number
  • Report any build-up of rubbish, or fly-tipping, to your local authority’s Environmental Health department
  • Do not store flammable items, such as recycling waste close to your property or business
  • Have skips collected once full
  • Wherever possible keep your bin in a safe, secure place, and don’t leave your bin out for collection longer than is necessary
  • Ensure commercial bins are secured when not in use and stored away from buildings. Lock them, where possible, overnight
  • Do not leave lighters, or matches, where children could reach them
  • Ensure you are aware of where your children, or the young people you look after, are and what they are doing
  • Make sure that your children are aware of the risks of playing with fire and the consequences of deliberately setting a fire. This could include injuring or killing themselves or someone else, and/or being left with a criminal record

Questions you may wish to ask at parents’ evenings

Jot down a list of questions and/or observations (not too many, though) on each subject in advance so you’re your appointments are focused and make the most of the limited time.

Some useful questions might be:

  • Is my child’s progress in line with the teacher’s expectations?
  • Has he or she done anything particularly well, or badly?
  • What can he or she do to improve?
  • Are they attending the extra revision sessions after school?
  • How can I help as a parent?
  • How can you help as his or her teacher?
  • How much time should my child’s homework for this subject take?
  • How much time should my child be reading for?
  • What do his or her grades tell us about possible performance in important future exams?
  • Does he or she contribute in lessons?
  • How does my child get along with the other pupils in the class and the teachers?

Make a note on the night of the teachers’ answers – after a couple of hours whisking from one subject to another, it can be easy to forget or muddle the comments.

…And more questions

Most teachers have a wealth of knowledge and experience, so ask for their guidance and suggestions on how you can help your child to do their best in the subject. If a teacher says something you don’t understand, ask for clarification. Parents are not expected to know all about a subject or a method of teaching.

Constructive criticism

Good teaching means identifying areas for improvement, so don’t be offended if you hear criticism of your child. This should always be constructive and designed to help them to achieve their potential in the subject. If your child is with you, try not to sound disappointed or negative – or tell your child off! Take the advice of the teacher as a positive step towards better marks in the future. Remember that it’s rarely helpful to compare your child’s performance to other members of the class, set or year group – what’s important is that they are achieving in line with their own capabilities, not those of others.
